Diseases spread by fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are some of the most prevalent health threats to dogs. From Lyme disease to heartworm, the effects of these diseases can be debilitating, and in some cases even deadly. The good news is they are easy to prevent, and when you consider prevention costs little more than a hundred dollars per year, the choice is obvious. We know you have many options, but the recommendations below have proven success and are the methods we trust the most!
FRONTLINE Plus – Topical Flea & Tick Medication
This medication is a spot treatment applied at the back of the neck that prevents fleas and ticks non-stop for a full 30 days. After application, the formula is stored in the oil glands of your pet’s skin and it has been shown to kill adult fleas within 12 hours of application. For those heading to the lake in the summer, it also is waterproof, so don’t worry about it washing off Fido when he decides to go for a swim! We recommend it over other topical flea & tick medications because it kills ticks and fleas at all stages of life, including eggs, larvae, and pupae, instead of just adults.
NexGard – Oral Flea & Tick Medication
NexGard is a product that is newer to our shelves, but one that we have had great client feedback and success with! These yummy, beef-flavored chews are easy to administer since they are similar to a treat, and they protect your dog from flea and tick infestations for a full 30 days. They are great for those who have dogs where a topical treatment is sometimes messy! We recommend NexGard, because unlike other oral medications, it kills both fleas and ticks in one medication.
Heartgard – Heartworm Prevention Medication
One mosquito is all it takes to transmit heartworms to your dog, and they can develop with almost no symptoms until the damage has already been done — and heartworms are potentially fatal. Treatment for this disease can be risky and painful to your dog, as well as costly for you. Heartgard is a delicious, soft-chew oral medication that is easy to administer. It is effective in killing existing heartworm larvae from the past 30 days, stopping the disease in its tracks, and continues to be effective for a month at a time. It also works to treat roundworms and hookworms, making it a triple threat!
As a final note, make sure that your furry friend is completely protected by using both a flea & tick medication and a heartworm prevention medication. We care about your pet’s well-being, which is why medication from our office is guaranteed to be both genuine and stored correctly, while keeping the cost per dose as low as possible.
